The Timeless Beauty of Wood Equestrian Structures: Arenas, Riding Pavilions & Barns

For equestrians who appreciate the warmth, character, and timeless appearance of natural wood, a custom wood equestrian structure can be an exceptional addition to a horse property.

At Silver Trophy Equine, we design and erect custom wood equestrian structures ranging from riding arenas and open-air riding pavilions to barns, stable complexes, and other specialty equestrian buildings. Our goal is to combine beautiful architecture with the functionality, durability, ventilation, natural light, and horse-centered design that a working equestrian facility requires.

Wood Riding Arenas

A wood riding arena offers an architectural character that is difficult to duplicate with a conventional metal building. Exposed wood framing, soaring rooflines, and carefully designed natural-light openings can transform an arena into a beautiful equestrian space that complements farms, estates, and traditional barn architecture.

One important consideration when selecting wood construction is arena width.

Our wood arena structures can be designed up to 85 feet wide.

For clients who require significantly wider clear-span arenas, Silver Trophy Equine can recommend alternative structural systems better suited to those dimensions. However, for private farms, training facilities, and equestrian properties where an 85-foot width works for the intended riding program, wood construction provides an attractive option.

An 85-foot-wide arena can accommodate many riding disciplines while allowing us to customize the overall length, entrances, kick walls, footing system, lighting, ventilation, viewing areas, and other features around the needs of the property.

Open-Air Wood Riding Pavilions

Not every equestrian property requires a completely enclosed indoor arena.

A wood riding pavilion can provide overhead protection from sun, rain, and weather while maintaining the open-air environment many horses and riders prefer.

Open-sided wood pavilions are particularly attractive on scenic properties where owners don’t want to lose the visual connection between the riding space and the surrounding farm.

Depending upon the project, we can design riding pavilions with open sides, partially enclosed sides, extended roof overhangs, protected viewing areas, storage spaces, custom entrances, and architectural details designed to complement existing buildings on the property.

The result can be a riding environment that feels less like a commercial building and more like an integrated part of the farm.

We also have the option of enclosing an arena at a later date, s you can begin with a pavilion style arena and in a few years, fully enclose it, most likely using the same crew who did the original erection.

We are happy to help you design and erect a barn as well !

Custom Wood Horse Barns

Silver Trophy Equine can also design and erect custom wood barns and stable complexes tailored to the horses, riders, staff, and daily operation of the facility.

A thoughtfully designed barn goes far beyond creating a row of stalls. The entire building should support the health and comfort of the horse while making everyday barn management more efficient.

Our barn designs can incorporate features such as custom stalls and stall fronts, oversized aisles, tack and feed rooms, grooming and wash areas, hay and equipment storage, veterinary and farrier areas, natural ventilation, abundant daylight, cupolas and roof ventilation, covered entrances, offices, lounges, viewing rooms, and other specialized spaces.

For larger projects, the barn, arena, riding pavilion, storage buildings, and supporting structures can be designed together to create a cohesive equestrian campus.

We also work closely with equine architects, engineers and site planners to make the project go smoothly. Call for referrals for most equestrian professional services 717-829-1766

Designed Around the Horse

At Silver Trophy Equine, we believe an equestrian building should be designed from the horse outward.

Horses spend a significant amount of time inside the environments we build for them. That makes airflow, temperature, natural light, acoustics, footing, drainage, stall configuration, and traffic patterns important considerations from the beginning of the design process.

Good equestrian architecture isn’t simply about creating an attractive building. It is about creating an environment in which horses can live, train, and perform comfortably.

That philosophy influences everything from the placement of doors and windows to ventilation strategies and the relationship between barns, arenas, paddocks, and turnout areas.

Architecture That Belongs on the Property

One of the greatest advantages of wood construction is its ability to complement an existing architectural setting.

Whether the property includes a traditional Pennsylvania farmstead, an elegant private equestrian estate, or a newly developed training facility, a wood structure can be designed with proportions, rooflines, siding, stonework, timber details, and finishes that connect the new building visually to its surroundings.

Rather than approaching an arena or barn as an isolated building, Silver Trophy Equine can consider the entire property.

The objective is to create a facility that functions beautifully for horses and riders while looking as though it has always belonged there.

From Concept to Completed Structure

Every horse property is different, which is why our projects begin with the needs of the client, the horses, the riding discipline, and the site.

Silver Trophy Equine can help develop the concept, layout, and design of your wood equestrian structure and carry that vision through erection and construction.

Whether you are considering an 85-foot-wide wood riding arena, an elegant open-air riding pavilion, a custom horse barn, or an entire equestrian facility, we can develop a structure specifically for your property and your goals.

Beautifully designed. Purpose-built for horses. Created for generations of equestrian use.
